CommuniPix - Magnetic Photo Symbols

CommuniPix is a company that allows users to upload photographs which are then turned into photo symbol magnets. Much like the picture communication symbol magnets from Barker Creek these magnets are perfect for PECS, magnetic communication boards and creating a language rich environment. A basic deck is also available for those who want to order something off-the-shelf. The website includes suggestions for symbols, placing and carrying photo magnets (such as magnetic paint primer and magnetic strips) and tips for photographing symbols.

Unrelated, but interesting, did you know you can also get dry erase paint, glow-in-the-dark paint and chalkboard paint?

Website of the Day - oSkope Visual Search

Via Larry Ferallzo's blog, I give you oSkope as an alternative to Google Images or what ever source people are using for photographs for making flashcards, importing into Boardmaker, making teacher created books and more.

oSkope allows you to search a website from a list. Right now the websites include Amazon, Ebay, Flickr, Fotolia, Yahoo Image and You Tube. I tried running some searches for item I sometimes need pictures of, like Chewy Tubes, bean bag chairs, various animal and classroom items like notebooks and computers.

oSkope worked great for finding exact photographic images of products I use in my classroom and thus want on Boardmaker boards and schedules for my students who respond better to photos. It worked just as well finding images of things like Pandas, the Yangtze River or snow storms for curriculum creations.

Some nice features are choosing how you want to view the images (a grid, a stack, etc), drag and drop to "My Folder" for e-mailing to yourself or someone else and the ability to search within a catagory - which is super for finding images of book or CD covers for communication boards or curriculum.

Sound too good to be true? There is a down side. Images are viewed in flash only, so no right click and "save as" or "copy". This is so annoying it sent me right back to Google Images for quick picture finding, although I will stick with Oskope for when I need to find lots of images at a time.

Website of the Day - Endless Potential Downloads

Endless Potential is a consulting company providing ABA services and commercial software for designing autism interventions, but buried deep in their site is a goldmine!

The Endless Potential Downloads Page has three sections: coloring, flashcards and worksheets. The coloring sheets are nothing to write home about and the worksheets are nice, basic level, full color activities with a sound educational basis. It is the flashcards that are something to see.

Listed under the sub-category of ABA teaching materials are forty-four folders of mostly high contrast color photographs of nouns, verbs and adjectives. These are perfect for exporting into Boardmaker, cutting and pasting into Word Documents of Power Point activities or just printing on cardstock to use as flashcards. Some of the folders have more images than others and you can pretty much skip the ones with the words, but overall I would recommend checking out this resource, especially if you have student who respond better to photos instead of pictures or who are transitioning from photos to pictures.
